My dogs keep fighting, how do I stop it?

cães brigando

It is very common for pet owners to have more than one dog, which is great since they can make each other company. However, rather it is through jealousy or other reasons, sometimes we face the issue of our dogs constantly fighting with each other.

That usually happens within the first moments of contact between the animals and can be a dangerous activity for both. That is why it’s important to understand why that happens and also how to make them stop fighting each other.

Why your dogs are fighting

Often times dogs are very sociable when they meet another pet on the street: not only do they not usually bark but also seem extremely excited to play around with them. Inside the house, however, the scenario shifts completely.

Although there are exceptions, the behaviour of a dog in relation to others tend to be extremely different inside and outside their home. Here are a few of the main reasons why they are fighting each other: dispute for food, toys, hierarchy or even the attention of their owners and family.

According to veterinary-doctor Tania Filo, there is a biological reason for that. “Dogs possess a hormonal startup that can create a territorial dispute in the home which they habit with other pets.” She explains. “This instinct to fight other animals in their own houses is directly connected to their survival in search for food, shelter, female or male companies, etc.”

How to split up your dogs fighting

Whether it’s inside or outside your home, facing two dogs fighting is something that concerns many pet lovers. And rightfully so! If we physically intervein in the conflict, we might get hurt. If we don’t, the dogs can end up deeply harming each other.

“Accident such as attacks and/or biting are prone to happen quite often. That is why you need to stay calm during the process.” Dr Filo orients. The specialist explains that the two safest and efficient methods to pull a dog fight apart are:

  • Make loud noises: clap, shake cans with coins or make noises with pans. By distracting the dogs, that will make them automatically cease the conflict and attempt to understand what’s happening in that new moment of confusion. Seems rather simple but they often forget the altercation afterwards.
  • Spray water on them: just like loud noises, water jets on the pets also direct the attention to an external factor, ceasing the dogs’ fury.

It is worth pointing out that, despite the recommendation to make loud noises, it is NOT recommended to yell or raise your tone. “That can alarm the dogs deeply and make the situation worse”, the specialist warns. It is ideal that the distraction seems to come from the environment, and not the pet owner.

After you calm them down

In case it was an atypical situation which doesn’t often happen in your household, it is important to pinpoint why they were fighting in the first place. For instance: if it was a dispute for toys, you could try to buy the same accessory so there are two of them. If it was a dispute for food, why not put the bowls separately?

Grow your business with PetsForever: Social App offers a thriving community of pet lovers for ethical companies

Founded by entrepreneur Eric Hsu earlier this year, the PetsForever app holds the purpose of connecting pet enthusiasts from all over Australia with a trusted platform where they can build profiles of their pets, share content, join or create communities and, most importantly, shop with a variety of ethical partners chosen by the Pets Forever team.

“I wanted to create a safe space for pet owners to connect, share stories of their pets and be able to become better pet parents,” says Eric, when explaining what drew him to create the platform. “Pet providers that meet our five-star rating system play a huge role in that scenario; in order to help our users become better pet parents, we must have a pool of ethical partners in our app store with the certainty knowing they value and respect our fur babies”

As of June of 2020, just two weeks after its beta release, the PetsForever app accounts for hundreds of active users in dozens of different communities, sharing their content and shopping through a range of pet businesses selling a vast range of products, from dog treats, premium designed bowls to genetic pet care and phone accessories.

Under that expansive scenario, PetsForever is offering the opportunity for ethical business owners to partner with the brand and grow their customer base under a great community of pet lovers who want nothing but the best for their furry families.

Those who are interested in growing their business with the platform are encouraged to contact business manager Josie Portelli through josie@petsforever.io and detail what makes their company an ethical partner for hundreds of caring pet owners to trust.

It is currently free to set up a business in the community, as the social app is still in its early, yet successful, stages of audience implementation. Those who decided to join the PetsForever group will have access to hundreds of Australian users looking to provide their pets with the best products in the market. Are you one of them?

Your cat is crying: What can you do about it?

gato com olhar triste

Cats are super fun and always willing to play with their humans. But when they are feeling down and unmotivated, is there a way for us to understand what is happening to them? Know that with just a few signs we are able to realise that something is indeed wrong. For example, did you know that is possible to figure out if your cat is crying?

For that reason, Pets Forever organised a few tips on why a cat cries, what causes and how to identify it. When you have that information you’ll be able to assist and bring joy back to your four-pawed buddy!

How to identify if your cat is crying

With dogs, their cries usually comes in the form of muffled whining, but when it comes to cats their discomfort is way more subtle. That is because most felines are very tough creatures who rarely feel the need to complain about any situation, so when they cry it is hard for most owners to realise that it’s happening.

However, if you’ve noticed that your pet meows in a much higher pitch and with very short intervals, it is possible that your cat is crying. Despite the fact that their eyes don’t water with tears, a cat’s high pitched and frequent meow doesn’t hide its dissatisfaction.

Remember: if you’ve noticed that your cat looks like they’re tearing up and having their eyes water, they are absolutely not crying and could be something much more serious. Take them to the vet because they might be suffering from allergies or ocular lesions.

Now let’s dive into the reasons why your cat might be crying.

What are the most common causes of cats crying?

The causes vary according to the age of your cat. For example, kittens tend to cry more easily, whether by the change of environment, missing their mother, being hungry, cold or afraid of something in the house.

In that case, put them in a very comfy place with plenty of food and water, besides a few toys so they can distract themselves. Their crying will most certainly be reduced and little by little whey will feel comfortable in their new home!

It is important to remember that kittens are still adapting to their environment and that change doesn’t happen overnight. So take care of your little furry friend and make them feel at home as soon as possible.

When it comes to adult cats, who are much stronger and won’t complain easily, it is quite possible that they are crying due to an abrupt change in their routine.

Felines are extremely territorial animals and that can cause many disruptions in their life, like the sudden absence of a toy, food, tree or even fellow pet. It is also possible that the crying is related to physical pain which can be noticed by a change in the way your cat walks, moves or eats.

What can you do when your cat is crying?

Start by observing if there was a recent change in their food brand, an adoption or lack of another pet or even if it’s because you moved houses. Those are very strong indications that your feline might be suffering from stress and, for that reason, cries.

In case you find a wound or notice that there is a lot of discomfort when your pet moves, verify the intensity of the main and how serious their wound is. If there is constant crying involved then you must take them to the vet immediately so that your little friend can feel better as soon as possible.

gato com cabeça entre as patas

Also, make sure to check if the cat is eating and drinking properly, and if their behaviour changes right before or after it’s time for their meal. It is all about observing them, treating the situation as a scientific experiment where you take notes on what might be wrong and trying to pinpoint the exact reason, You will find it and they will be very grateful!

How to talk to your dog

The interaction owner-dog is not limited to a few commands, like “stay” or “give me your paw”. Ask any dog trainer and they’ll tell you that they have engaged in some form of dialogue with their pets. If you are interested in learning how to actually communicate with your dog, it is time to find out how to talk to your dog and what science has to say about the practice.

Can dogs understand what we say?

There is no doubt that dogs are capable of identifying commands and individual words, one evidence of that is the fact that they are always aware of when we call their names. Before, it was believed that a dog’s understanding of human language conveyed simply to our gestures and tones. Today, however, science evaluates that their understanding goes way beyond those aspects, with some dogs being able to understand up to 200 words!

We know that they are extremely smart creatures that communicate with us through their body language and barks. However, it is not always possible to know which way is best for making our furry friends understand us.

A study conducted at the University of Lórand, in Budapest, and published by Science magazine, suggests that pets are capable of responding to a mixture of the last three mentioned factors; gestures, intonation and words.

During the research, dogs were put inside an MRI machine and exposed to a vast range of audio stimuli: their tutors and owners would say several different words into the machine, each one with several different tones of speech.

To the surprise of the scientific community, the dogs were capable of recognising the words in a vast frame of context, such as complementary, neutral or negative, depending on the intonation. And what is even more revealing: they did it using the left side of their brain, the same side that humans use for the understanding of languages and symbols.

The study means that, like us, dogs are capable of decyphering the vocabulary separately of their owner’s intonation, but also combining the two, in order to have a full grasp of what their humans are trying to communicate. Dogs are truly fascinating, aren’t they?

How to talk to your dog: The importance of intonation

The fact that dogs are capable of understanding words does not mean that intonation is not an essential factor for healthy communication, though. “Studies from the past two decades have confirmed that the higher your pitch is, the more focused your dog engages with your speech, which makes it much easier for you to train them”, says Dr Julia Sanz, veterinary researcher.

The good news is that you’re very likely to have already been doing it naturally since most pet owners often talk to their animals in a high pitched tone to invoke affection. It is also easy to see if the animals are understanding us or not, given that their response time (or lack of it) is always immediate.

According to the research presented by the University of Lórand, when addressing dogs humans should always use a tone called “derivative language to dogs”. Constructed by short and simple sentences, it is similar to the language that humans use when speaking to a child up to three years of age. However, the tone delivered should be even higher pitched than those with children which, as said previously, helps dogs to understand us better.

The volume of our speech, according to Dr Sanz, should also be a bit louder than usual. “It should be the same level as you would normally use when repeating a sentence to an adult that didn’t understand you the first time you said it”, she explains.

Since dogs understand us, can I lecture him on bad behaviour?

Yes, but don’t exaggerate: despite understanding expressions like “let’s go for a walk”, dogs aren’t able to keep up with everything we say at the same level. Despite being very intelligent creatures, it is obvious that their knowledge of a language doesn’t come remotely close to that of human beings.

For that reason, if your pet does something wrong the best way to teach your dog is not by punishing them with moral lessons or emotional blackmail. They will not understand that the right place to pee is on the hygienic paper or that you get upset when they bring dirt to your bed just because you shouted that information to them several times.

For that reason, pet owners and trainers must always understand that talking to your dog aggressively and in an elevated tone will not make them understand the message you wish to convey. On the contrary, it will simply make them anxious and fearful of you without knowing why you’re behaving that way, which can be quite detrimental to their wellbeing.

Ten facts about cats and dogs that you’ve always wanted to know

cats dog

The world of cats and dogs is a surprising one and despite us sharing that world with them, there are a lot of things they do that we don’t understand. Those with a furry friend learn with time that bark means pain, that meow means hunger, we know when they’re sick, but even so, there are still several questions hanging above us, like why do cats eyes shine at night and why do dogs have the habit of sniffing the butts of their fellow canines?

In this article Pets Forever will clarify those and other questions that pet owners always had about their furry family!

1- Can cats really see in the dark?

cats dark

Felines are nocturnal animals and they can see up to seven times farther and better than human beings. But even cats need at least a little bit of light to guide themselves. In complete darkness, they also won’t be able to use their sight, but due to their whiskers, they are able to guide themselves well and not hit corners or objects like us humans would in the dark.

2- What is a dog’s sense of smell like?

dog-188273_1280

A dog’s sense of smell is much better than those of his human buddies. While the olfactive cells of a human being can reach 5 million, dogs can have them up to 220 million, making them the best sniffers of the entire nature! If the membranes situated inside a dog’s nose were extended flat, they would always be bigger than the dog itself. That is why police use dogs to detect illegal substances in large, open spaces and when there’s a certain quantity of luggage or bags to be verified. Dogs are also commonly used in borders, airports and also strongly solicited when searching for people that have disappeared. Their sense of smell is incomparable!

3- Why does a cat’s eyes glow in the dark?

3656514979_bf75bf11c4_o

Many animals with a habit of nocturnal hunting (like some reptiles and several mammals) possess a surface on the retina called Tapetum Lucidum. Such part of the eye works as a mirror and helps those animals see better in the dark because it reflects the light back into the photoreceptive layer of the eye, offering a second opportunity for the image to be captured appropriately by the retina. The composition of that reflective layer is very diverse, but it works the same way in all animals. When they are in the dark, their pupils get completely dilated and expose the Tapetum Lucidum. For that reason, when a stream of light coming from a headlight or even moonlight hits their eyes, that surface is reflected, giving us the impression that their eyes are glowing on their own. Those who have cats who love to hide under the bed have definitely seen that scenario hundreds of times!

4- In what ways are dogs similar to humans?

baby-694764_1280

There’s a reason dogs are often called “a man’s best friend” because we really are alike in several biological factors! Just like us humans, dogs can suffer from depression, low self-esteem, they feel when they are truly loved, feel when they are being treated unfairly, can be fearful of their owners and analyse situations to not make us upset (which they should never have to do!). What you probably didn’t know is that just like humans, the dogs from the Chihuahua breed are born with a soft spot in their skull, that closes as they get older. Crazy, right? Generally speaking, dogs are just as smart as a child between 2 and 3 years of age, which means that they are able to understand up to 200 words!

5- Why do cats purr?

cat-408784_1280Scientists are still not quite sure why cats purr. Plenty of veterinarians believe that a cat purrs by making their vocal cords vibrate in the lowest portion of their throat. In order for that to be possible, a muscle in the larynx opens and closes the passage of air up to 25 times per second. The purr can come from a variety of reasons not quite well defined yet, but it is still believed to be a condition of extreme joy, love and happiness.

6- Why do dogs nibble so much?

labrador-243655_1280

The teeth of puppies start surfacing when they are around three weeks old, while the definitive teeth replace the infant ones when they have about four to seven months of age. For that reason, they are extremely inclined to nibbling things during that period to alleviate discomfort and pain of the teeth that are coming by from under their gums.  Already in the adult phase, they usually nibble to sharpen their teeth.

7- Why are cats so independent?

cat-351340_1280

Cats are lonely hunters. They are extremely intelligent creatures, able to calculate, solve problems and invent new ways of hunting for their survival. Even domesticated, cats are always in touch with their wild essence. When they scratch sofas or climbing through your house, they imagine themselves in a tree or a cliff. Have you noticed how they are very light sleepers? That’s because they are always focused, even during bedtime.

8- Why do dogs sniff butts?

Sniffing

Since dogs don’t have hands to greet each other and say: “Nice to meet you, I’m Dog!”, they usually sniff each other’s butts as a way of getting to know one another. Almost for the same reason that they lick each other; they want to show reverence, to demonstrate that they like another dog. For that reason, if a dog licks you, be happy! It means they love you.

9- Why do cats lick so much?

file7821257440845

Everyone knows that cats are extremely clean and tidy creatures, but do you know why that is? They are great hunters and as such, they cannot allow themselves to be noticed by their prey or a potential predator, so they lick themselves a lot in order to mask or remove their own smell. They hide their feces and urine in the sand for the same reason; they want to leave no trails of them being there! Wild dogs always walk in packs so they don’t need to be so cautious about their presence. If they ever came into attack there are others around to help, unlike cats who are always alone but are much more lethal.

10- How do dogs see the world?

dog-56978_1280

The common belief that dogs are colourblind is actually not false when comparing to humans. Dogs can see colours, but not in a scheme like we do. They can distinguish between blue, yellow and grey, but are not able to see spectrums of red and green, which are the spectrums that humans are able to identify the easiest, blue being the third in our human eye.

Is it safe to order pet food online?

Buying goods for your pet online has become the latest trend nowadays. Many people feel it is convenient and time-saving. Some pet owners may prefer to buy food for their pets online, while others rather simply go to the nearest store. But, is it safe to purchase your pet’s food online?

Why should you order your pet food online?

If you want to buy high-quality food that is not available in local pet stores then yes, this is a brilliant idea. You will find the food you want. First, make sure to compare with different sites and then buy from a store with fair prices. Also, it is important to compare the shipping policies and buy from a store that favours you. Take advantage of online reviews left by other customers for you to make a sound decision. If it is your first-time buying food for your pet online, make sure to buy a small amount to see if your dog will like it.

If your favourite local pet store does not store premium pet food, you can take advantage of the online pet suppliers. However, you should clearly know what you are looking for. This should not be a trial and error game. Remember, what you feed your pet contributes to their overall health. Sites like Amazon.com and Petfooddirect.com are some of the safest and most reputable suppliers that deliver to your doorstep. They are known for selling high-quality pet food from reputable brands. Also, you get to find premium pet food brands that are not available from your local pet store in Australia.

One of the main advantages of buying your pet food online is that you have a wide selection of foods to choose from. But caution should be exercised if your pet has health issues or requires a special diet. In case your pet does need a special diet, purchasing your pet food online gives you a wide range of specific products that were probably not available anywhere else, especially in large quantities. It will be easier for you to get access to grain and gluten-free pet food, for instance. The food also may have high protein percentages, and you may be lucky to find pre-packed raw diets that might be missing from your local shop.

Is it safe to order online?

You should always purchase from sites that have secure connections. Online fraudsters and hackers can really mess you up, and extra precautions should be observed when purchasing any product online. If possible, it is best to purchase from stores that accept PayPal. Also, some online stores have an automatic renewal of pet orders depending on your needs. With this feature, you do not run out of pet food.

Avoid ordering anything online using public computers and Wi-Fi since you may never know who will get hold of your bank details. In case you have no access to a personal computer, make sure to logout and clear your browsing history. Do you check your account bills regularly? Make sure to track your bills to avoid unknown invoices. In case you find invoices that you do not know about, raise the issue with the store for an immediate refund.

Before purchasing from an online store, you are required to register an account. Make sure to create a strong password that is hard to hack. Remember: No online pet store asks for your bank details or passwords. In case this happens, do not share any confidential information and report them for fraudulent activities.

Should I mind about the shipping costs?

Most of the time, we avoid purchasing from online pet stores because of shipping fees. However, online pet stores often offer discounted prices that cover shipping costs. Therefore, the price ranges about the same as the local pet store or slightly above. Always make sure you know the time the store takes to ship their products to avoid any inconveniences.

Buying from a pet store in Australia is advised if the local pet store does not offer the product you want. Premium products are not easily found locally, and spending something small to cover the shipping cost would be advisable. You can consider talking to your local store to stock products you feel they are missing. It doesn’t matter where you choose to buy your pet food. The only thing that matters is if the pet food can give the pet the nutrition value they need. Buying pet food from the store or in your favourite Australian pet foot store is a choice of the buyer. Whatever is best for your pets, works!

Every pet has a story

The attachment between pets and their owners is something that cannot be explained. Today, many people appreciate and understand the benefits of having a pet in their life. In fact, many pet owners love their pets like their children and enjoy their company. Australia has the highest number of pet owners in the world. About 61% of households have pets. The stories of these pets bring about animal tales in Australia, and telling them to others becomes exciting and interesting. Today, more and more often, people have included their pets in family events. This clearly shows that pets are important members of our family. In many homes, pets have become great companions to the children. If pets are so important in our lives, how can we live without them? In case you are used to living with a pet, then living without them would feel empty.

Our pets will always give a shoulder to lean on.

Our pets bring more happiness to our lives than they appear. They show us real love companion, love, and emotional connection that most humans crave for. Most pet owners find themselves changing their ways after owning a pet. We do our best to make sure that our pets are comfortable, healthy, and safe.

Taking care of pets gives pet parents a sense of purpose.

Just like a parent would wake up and look forward to taking care of their children, the same case happens to pet parents. They are happy to know that there is someone who will be delighted to see them when they get back home. Science tells us a hormone known as oxytocin hormone that is produced in both the dog and the owner by just staring into a dog’s eyes. Isn’t that awesome? If you want a relationship with another person to go wrong immediately, simply show them that you don’t like their pets and it will happen right away. This is an easy way of understanding how much their pets mean to them. It doesn’t matter what situation you are facing, but you will have one friend that will never leave your side. Whether you are broke, sick, or even happy, your pet will stick by your side no matter what, unlike humans who can distance themselves from one another as time goes by and things go unexpectedly. Your pet will also tend to sympathize with you by cuddling and showing affection when they sense you are not happy. Every pet owner has a unique relationship with their pet. To others, they are their best friends, while others view them as their children. There is one thing that is common to all pet owners. Their pets are precious and loved members of the family.

What is your pet’s story?

Is your dog howling too often? Here’s what you can do to help them!

Dogs have their own little peeves and every pet owner who has a canine buddy at their house are able to talk about one quality, one characteristic that can make their say “my dog does this but most dogs don’t”. Dogs are truly very unique creatures, in their own way! However, there are things that every dog does but that still intrigue us, and their howling is a good example of that.

After all, why do dogs howl?

Well, it’s a very common tool coming from our four-pawed friends which allows them to communicate with one another in longer distances, but their reasons for it are not always clear. It is very common for us to think that a dog’s howl is some sort of cry of anguish for help, therefore they must be howling out of suffering or pain. Although that is partially correct, there is a very specific reason as to why your dog might be howling, which relates to its lifestyle and health: they wanna be dogs!

Dogs are beautiful creatures that love the sense of freedom and connection provided by their owners, nature and fellow canines, but sometimes they feel a bit lonely and distant from all the fun and connection to the world that they love to have. That issue is commonly referred to in the veterinarian community as Separation Anxiety.

So in order to make life easier for those beauties, here are a few things that you can do:

– Walk your dog more often

This is possibly the best way to make sure that your dog is getting the right amount of joy and attention; see the world with them! By establishing an exercise routine they will always be sure that there is enough time in their day for interacting with nature and being in touch with themselves and others. In other words, spend some quality time with them; go out there and play! But that is often not possible in a lot of occasions since us humans usually lead very busy lives! In those circumstances, you can also-

– Give him solid, responsive toys

Responsive and durable toys are a great way of making sure that the dogs are keeping themselves busy throughout the day. Make sure to download our PetsForever app with a selection of local partners that have an extensive catalogue of great toys and gadgets that your pup will certainly love!

But could those not be the causes of my dog howling so much?

Yes. If your dog has a very active social and physical life but is still howling constantly, there are some signs that you can look for to identify and remediate the problem:

– They might be responding to other sounds

Whether it is another animal or an annoying sound that is disturbing them, dogs can react to different things in their environment that they perceive as good or threatening. In those cases, however, the howling is not frequent and will cease once the sounds do. If the problem is frequent try to identify sounds that might be disturbing your pet; chances are it’s something very minimal that you wouldn’t notice on a day to day basis. If it is something trivial that cannot be changed, such as the click-clacking of a refrigerator, you can show your pet that the noise is not harmful and give them treats for staying quiet.

Regardless of the reason, howling occasionally is perfectly normal, but always make sure to keep an eye on your dog if it is happening too often. Chances are it’s an easy fix and they will be very glad that you took some time to figure out what was wrong!
